The Mazda3 2.0 sedan is discontinued, leaving the 2.5-liter engine as the standard power plant, again. The 2.5-liter is also 5 horsepower more potent: 191 horsepower. All 2.5-liter non-turbo engines are now equipped with cylinder deactivation in order to save fuel. Fuel mileage is increased considerably on all non-turbo models.

Rear seat side impact airbags and rear seat safety belt pre-tensioners are new, and standard on all models.

Sedan medals won’t arrive until after the first of the year.

The base engine gains 5 horsepower, for a total of 191 in the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. The base engine also receives cylinder deactivation technology. Between the different changes, fuel mileage is improved both in the city and on the highway by two MPG: 26 city/33 highway.

Mazda has added rear seat-mounted side impact airbags, and rear outboard seat belt pretensioners, and made structural enhancements in order to pass the new, tougher IIHS side impact test.

Base price is up $800, although 2.5 S preferred is almost $400 lower and Carbon Edition is over $1000 higher.

The plain Turbo model is discontinued, leaving speed lovers the Turbo Premium or Turbo Premium Plus, both of which increase over $1000.

Normally-aspirated Premium models no longer have satellite radio, but the navigation system’s traffic feature is still provided.
